Casino and Game Tips > A Blackjack Primer

When first learning about blackjack play, it is important to stick to basic strategy. More seasoned blackjack players may take some risks and try out strategies that work for them, but beginners will want to stick with the strategy that has proven to offer the best payout.
Before memorizing basic strategy, it is good to know the basics of blackjack. The goal of blackjack is to have one's cards be closer to 21 than the dealer, without going over 21 (busting). Numbered cards are valued at their number (i.e. a deuce will be worth 2). Face cards jack through king are worth 10, and aces are worth 1 or 11. A "blackjack" is when a player is dealt a 21, which is an ace along with any other card valued at 10.
To begin, the players are dealt two cards face down, while the dealer deals two cards to his or herself with one face up. This face up card is the key to blackjack strategy. A person must compare his or her hand with the dealer's card to know if they want to "hit," which means to get another card from the dealer.
For proper blackjack play, follow these basic rules:

  • Never hit with 17 or higher
  • "Split" aces and eights
  • Hit if the dealer is showing a card from a 7 to an ace (unless one has 17 or higher)
